Wordy。 I focused while reading the first half of this book, but grew very weary, so I speed-read the second half。 I don't recommend this book。 I read it because Brooke Castillo said it had a big impact on her。 I can see how some of the things Beck teaches likely influenced Castillo。 Castillo just says it all so much better and simpler。 Others have too。 I also don't prefer Beck's writing style in general。 She inserts pop-culture references, but since this was published twenty years ago a lot of t Wordy。 I focused while reading the first half of this book, but grew very weary, so I speed-read the second half。 I don't recommend this book。 I read it because Brooke Castillo said it had a big impact on her。 I can see how some of the things Beck teaches likely influenced Castillo。 Castillo just says it all so much better and simpler。 Others have too。 I also don't prefer Beck's writing style in general。 She inserts pop-culture references, but since this was published twenty years ago a lot of them seem trite and cliche。 At the same time, there are some potentially helpful things in this book for someone who is new to the self-help world。 I'm not, so this felt like trying to wade through old mud。 The good news is that my "essential" self is doing very well according to her quiz。 So this book probably just wasn't for me anyway。 。。。more

This book was like wrapping myself up in a weighted blanket while it firmly but gently told me that I'm a boss and can do it, no pressure。 Great writing, great exercises that I highly recommend you try! Really brought great insight to my life。 I highly recommend for anyone that's looking for a book to awake their inner self。 This book was like wrapping myself up in a weighted blanket while it firmly but gently told me that I'm a boss and can do it, no pressure。 Great writing, great exercises that I highly recommend you try! Interestingly。。。“Our own North Star is not a place, but a sense of being, which is a state we we are fully, and only, ourselves”🙏🏻“We are all designed with the ability to find the life we are meant to live”🙏🏻And。。。“People who refuse to change and to try new things are stagnant and old by their twenties 😉。 People who actually pursue change are guaranteed to die young。 They are like flowing water forever refreshed and refreshing” 🙏🏻Heading towards。。。My North Star🙏🏻This book is a 10/10

My 89th read of 2020 is a book that I have been waiting to read for as long as I can remember。 The title “Finding your own north star” was just calling to me, and it is exactly what I was hoping for, and more。 Plus point: Martha Beck, the author, writes in a witty and humorous way, with plenty of anecdotes that just helps you to get the point。

Several years into retirement, I’m not the best audience for this book。 I think it would be a good fit for people who are mid-career or younger as they’re looking to make changes。

Carol

Life changing。Took me a long time to get through this book because there was so much to understand about myself per these ideas。 But worth it。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really wanted to like this book。 It was mentioned in You Are A Badass and it sounded interesting。 Nowhere does it address people who are INTROVERTS。 This book made me feel bad about myself because I don’t have an “everybody”。 I don’t have unlimited resources like most of these examples。 Also, I need to seek professional help, as does everyone who reads this book。 In one square it says is you really don’t want to do something, then you are going the wrong direction。 Then in square 3 it says jus I really wanted to like this book。 It was mentioned in You Are A Badass and it sounded interesting。 Nowhere does it address people who are INTROVERTS。 This book made me feel bad about myself because I don’t have an “everybody”。 I don’t have unlimited resources like most of these examples。 Also, I need to seek professional help, as does everyone who reads this book。 In one square it says is you really don’t want to do something, then you are going the wrong direction。 Then in square 3 it says just suck it up and do it。 Well, which one is it? I found parts contradicting。 It was long and redundant。 I couldn’t even figure out what square I belong in because they all resonated with me in one way。 Oh and what annoyed me most was when she said “don’t bother meditating”。 。。。more

Entertaining writing style interspersed with personal history and interesting client stories along with pleasant exercises, a positive attitude and patience for finding one's North Star, that is, the place you feel satisfied, realised, healthy, resilient and at home in your own skin。 Entertaining writing style interspersed with personal history and interesting client stories along with pleasant exercises, a positive attitude and patience for finding one's North Star, that is, the place you feel satisfied, realised, healthy, resilient and at home in your own skin。 。。。more

I may have discovered this book a bit late, but I’m so glad I discovered it just the same! It has shot up into my top 5 favorites easily。 Highly recommend it to anyone going through big life changes。 Martha N。 Beck nailed it so beautifully。 I borrowed it from the library, so I can’t wait to find this gem sitting on a bookshelf someday in a charming bookstore so I can keep a copy to treasure all to myself。

Well I think by now we all know that there is no life without a purpose and a purpose without a direction。 Martha Beck (author), shares the key on how one can navigate their own lives and find that north star, the direction so to say。I mostly enjoyed the truth bombs, practical exercises, personal stories shared in the book as much as I enjoyed Martha's sense of humor 😂。From the book I have gathered the following lessons :1。 You can not create a new life without destroying the one you've got。2。 D Well I think by now we all know that there is no life without a purpose and a purpose without a direction。 Martha Beck (author), shares the key on how one can navigate their own lives and find that north star, the direction so to say。I mostly enjoyed the truth bombs, practical exercises, personal stories shared in the book as much as I enjoyed Martha's sense of humor 😂。From the book I have gathered the following lessons :1。 You can not create a new life without destroying the one you've got。2。 Do not wait for them to feel good about your success before you build the life you were meant to live。3。 You don't cope with change by becoming indifferent to it。4。 Never let someone push you into a major decision while going through the uncertainty。5。 You are the best destination you could possibly imagine or experience。Also from the book, you will learn how to read your internal compasses, tips on how to regain control and steer your life and many more things on how to go about your true path。I enjoyed reading this book and Martha's sense of humor!! 。。。more

I confess, I'm a big Martha Beck fan since I started reading her column in O magazine。 She speaks with such gentle wisdom and a sincere desire to aid readers in their quests to heal and improve their lives。 This book provides a blueprint for getting from A to Z (and doesn't give short shrift to the fact that the journey will be repeated many times over a lifetime)。 I'm keeping in for my personal library - and that says a lot! Loved every。single。word。 I tried to read a Martha Beck book years ago and it didn't stick。 I couldn't even get through it。 I finally picked this book up because I had heard so much about it and decided to give her another shot。 From the very first paragraph, I was entertained, inspired and ultimately educated。 I really do feel much more clear on how to get my life on track。 Her voice is irreverent, wise and kind – a refreshing spin on the earnest life coach bubble。 I literally feel like I found Loved every。single。word。 I tried to read a Martha Beck book years ago and it didn't stick。 I couldn't even get through it。 I finally picked this book up because I had heard so much about it and decided to give her another shot。 From the very first paragraph, I was entertained, inspired and ultimately educated。 I really do feel much more clear on how to get my life on track。 Her voice is irreverent, wise and kind – a refreshing spin on the earnest life coach bubble。 I literally feel like I found my fairy career god mother。 Totally worth every second。 I only wish I had read it decades earlier。 。。。more

I thought the first half was good and made me think, the second half not so much。 I felt really happy when doing some of the exercises at the beginning。 Also, Beck's surprisingly really funny。 I thought the first half was good and made me think, the second half not so much。 I felt really happy when doing some of the exercises at the beginning。 Also, Beck's surprisingly really funny。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Her writing style is funny and the stories in there about her own life and her clients are captivating。 I didn’t do all of the activities in the book, but I actually think I’d like to own this book so I could do them and write in it, which is saying a lot for a librarian who borrows her books for free!

It feels so good to have finished a book。 I've been reading this and another book by Martha Beck at the same time since October, took a break to read Byron Katie's book, and started this one all over again。 I had to read this book for a class, and enjoyed every minute of it, though it did have its cheesy and outdated jokes。 Otherwise, very inspiring- it really spoke to me。 My everybodies have been loud! Now I want to finish that other book ASAP so I can get back to reading fiction again soon! I didn’t realize this book was written almost 20 years ago I can sure tell how the way of thinking and self-help has changed。 There were lots of exercises to do that would hopefully result in new ideas and things to get you on your way。You have to find out what resonates with you and it’s up to you to find your own Northstar or how I have always said you are responsible for your own happiness。

Soo, sooo good。 I already want to reread it (I know, that's a common theme with me)。 And she's such an engaging, inviting writer not just in her style, but her anecdotes。Super helpful book; the essential self vs。 social self was illuminating and so spot on。 Soo, sooo good。 I already want to reread it (I know, that's a common theme with me)。 And she's such an engaging, inviting writer not just in her style, but her anecdotes。Super helpful book; the essential self vs。 social self was illuminating and so spot on。 。。。more

This book is not going to sit well with everyone, I couldn’t help but think that throughout。 But ultimately, at one point or another, there is a time for everyone to read this and find the utmost value in it。 I tend to be critical of authors’ logic or supporting evidence, and yet, here, I never felt like I needed to。 Every page seemed to be a direct link to something I have experienced myself。 Some lines hit thoughts I’ve never even been able to truly articulate myself despite them being so inte This book is not going to sit well with everyone, I couldn’t help but think that throughout。 But ultimately, at one point or another, there is a time for everyone to read this and find the utmost value in it。 I tend to be critical of authors’ logic or supporting evidence, and yet, here, I never felt like I needed to。 Every page seemed to be a direct link to something I have experienced myself。 Some lines hit thoughts I’ve never even been able to truly articulate myself despite them being so intertwined with my identity。I needed this book, and I’m so glad it found its way into my possession。 。。。more
